Texture 2D + Memory Issue

I'm working on a profile manager for iOS, where the user can enter a name, and add a profile photo. The profile photo is either chosen from the Native 'Camera Roll', or Native 'Take a Photo'. The photos are then cropped to a perfect square, and then rescaled to a res of 256 x 256. Every time I import a photo from the gallery (or take one), the memory jumps from 30Mbs, to 180Mbs. Meaning each time I import a photo, it takes up 150Mbs of memory. Even though the end result of the image is 256 x 256. Any suggestions why this may be happening? Thanks. --- UPDATE --- When I relaunch the app, it automatically loads in the profile images (the 256 x 256 versions), and the app memory is fine. (30mb). So it must be to do with my crop and rescale functions, right? (maybe cacheing the files when it converts?) (Running on iPad Air)
